AutoPilot updates the extensions of your Joomla site for you: components, modules, plugins, templates and so on, but not Joomla itself. It works inside Joomla and with Joomla's own parts: the update servers of your extensions, Joomla's installer and Joomla's Scheduled Tasks.

  • You choose the extensions. Every extension has its own auto-update switch, and all switches start off.
  • Joomla's scheduler does the work. One task looks for new versions twice a day. Another installs the available updates once a day. Joomla starts these tasks when somebody visits the site, or on time when you set up a cron job.
  • Updates are installed the way Joomla installs them. AutoPilot uses the same packages Joomla lists under System → Update → Extensions, and Joomla's own installer.
  • Everything is recorded. Activity lists every update with its result.
  • There is no backup. The free edition saves nothing before an update and cannot undo one, so keep making regular site backups. Snapshots, checks after each update and rollback are part of AutoPilot Pro.

You find it under Components → AutoPilot. It opens in its own full-screen interface, with its screens in the sidebar on the left and Back to admin at the top right to return to Joomla.
