Every rule can be set at three levels. The most specific level that has a value wins:

  1. The extension's own setting, from its Extension settings.
  2. Its group's setting, when it is in a published group.
  3. The global setting, from Settings → Schedule.

An automatic update is installed only when all of these are true:

  • Auto-update is on for the extension.
  • The extension is due according to its schedule.
  • The time is inside the maintenance window, if one applies.
  • The delay since the version was first seen has passed.
  • The version pin allows the new version.
  • The update's stated Joomla and PHP requirements fit your site.
  • The update is approved, when approval is required.

When one of them is not true, the update is skipped for now and tried again on a later run. The reason is shown in Dry run and recorded in Activity. The same skip is not recorded again on every run, so the lists stay readable.

Manual updates ignore the schedule, the window, the delay and approval. They respect nothing but your click.
