A scheduled update goes through these steps for each extension:

  1. Check. AutoPilot asks each extension's own update server whether a newer version exists. These are the same servers Joomla itself uses.
  2. Decide. It checks your rules: is auto-update on for this extension, is it due, are we inside the maintenance window, has the delay passed, does the version pin allow it, does it need approval?
  3. Snapshot. It saves the extension's files and database tables, so the update can be undone.
  4. Install. It downloads the package, verifies the checksum when the developer publishes one, and installs it with Joomla's own installer.
  5. Verify. It checks that the extension is still installed and enabled, that the version is right, and that your homepage and administrator login still load without a PHP error.
  6. Report. It records the result in Activity, and emails you when something failed or needs your approval.

If a check fails, AutoPilot does not roll back by itself. It tells you, and you decide. Rolling back takes two clicks.

AutoPilot Pro updates extensions only: components, modules, plugins, templates, libraries, language packs, file packages and packages. It does not update Joomla itself. Use System → Update → Joomla for that.
